'NATO secretary general Mark Rutte reaffirms support for Ukraine', but wait a minute, Ukraine's not even in NATO.

So Ukraine is really just a proxy for NATO as well as for the US.

We've known this since the recent NYT article explained the NATO micromanagement of the conflict from the start.

Clearly now Rutte feels no need any longer to disguise the fact NATO is at war with Russia.

This is of course why Putin could/can never trust anything the US/EU/UK/NATO say with regards to Ukraine looking back and going forward, and why they're probably better off just resolving their Ukrainian problem themselves.

The US took a back seat during the Minsk talks leaving it up to the 'impartial' Europeans.

Putin found out he couldn't trust the west after the collapse of the Minsk agreements, now it's out in the open as to why that happened. Those pretending to be mediators in the talks were actually backing Ukraine all along.

Now Ukraine has ended up like a prize fighter with a dozen corner men all fussing around trying to prop him up and push him back out for yet another punishing round in a seemingly never ending fight, never ending until one of the combatants drops dead that is.

And Zelensky's not one of the combatants, he's just another corner man. It's all of Ukraine that's at risk of dropping dead.

Ukraine. Where did it all go wrong:

Back in 2016 pictures in UK newspapers of grandstands full of Ukrainians with swastika tattoos at a Euro football tournament held in the UK were a curiosity.

It was also a sign something was going badly wrong in Ukraine.

The US facilitated coup of 2014 overturned the democratically elected government and then, somehow, the country was just turned over to the ultra-nationalist movement of west Ukraine.

Interesting interview on recent Ukrainian events with Ukrainian historian Marta Havryshkowho who was raised in west Ukraine, and is certainly not pro-Russian.


Zelensky remains uninvited.

Big meetings on European security going on but only Witkoff is meeting with Putin, - meetings lasting 5 hours!!!

What should happen in Paris is that the EU/UK admit they don't have the capacity or the public consensus to provide any guarantees to Ukraine at all.

The US should admit all the aid (money, equipment, military intel, command and control personnel, security guarantees) is all coming to an end and it's time for Ukraine to come to terms with Russia from the realistic position of weakness, as a position of strength is simply never going to happen.

Rubio gives a clear signal the US is very close to walking away from the whole show. He says the US needs to see clear progress towards a deal to end the conflict very soon.

Though this is said to both Ukraine and Russia it can really only be aimed at Ukraine needing to move towards a realistic deal instead of wanting to hold out until the US puts Zelensky in a 'position of strength' because that's just not going to happen.

The US must now be looking beyond the 'unconditional ceasefire' idea not least because it was never going to fly anyway. Traditionally during war, such a proposal only ever comes from the losing side and is never agreed to by a winning side.

An unconditional ceasefire is, in effect, asking the winning side to give up it's advantage and both sides return back to their respective corners to rest and re-arm.

No winning side will ever agree to it. It's only ever agreed to if both sides have fought each other to a standstill and that's certainly not the case here.

The ceasefire proposal originally came from Kellogg who mistakenly thought the conflict was in stalemate, Zelensky immediately jumped onboard because he knows he's losing, and as an ex General, Kellogg should have known it as well.

This lack of understanding of attrition in a war with a near peer adversary by western politicians, and bizarrely, by military staff too, is the reason for the mistaken belief that the conflict is in a stalemate, and why the EU/UK keep pushing this lost cause.

After all they say, where's all the big arrow manoeuvring in tanks like when we're fighting guys in sandals holding nothing but Kalashnikovs?

Putin does not need to move his position, Zelensky does. And now the US is telling Zelensky he must act now or the US will cut all the strings that are holding Ukraine up. A catastrophic collapse would inevitably follow.
