They know their people would turn on them if they did.
3 years ago everyone said Ukraine must not get into a war of attrition with Russia as they would inevitably lose.
And yet here we are, Ukraine going backwards and running out of men, money and ammo.
But, but, what happened to the 'we're winning' from just last week according to the top US General in charge of the conflict in his address to congress.
If only the EU/UK politicians had some kind of a clue as to why the Russians are doing all this, if only they would say something
So Russia will continue to mop up what's left of the Ukrainian army until Putin's aims on starting the SMO are achieved.
- A guarantee Ukraine not being allowed into NATO (or no Ukraine will do just as well if a piece of paper can't be signed). Not difficult
- Replace the ultra-nationalist Kiev govt (denazification), just having an election will fix that. Again, not difficult.
- Russia will keep any gains made on the battlefield as per convention, not that anyone's able to take it away from them anyway.
That's it really.
In the meantime not really sure what the EU/UK politicians are waiting for, what do they think is going to change while the Ukrainians get on with their dying. A meteor strike on the Kremlin perhaps?
6 countries promise troops for Ukraine from the 'Coalition of the Retarded'.
That would be a thousand or so from the UK, a few more from France and about 50 each from Denmark, and the 3 Baltic states.
The only snag is that they can't go unless the US is holding their hand.
And Ukrainian army commander Syrsky gives an interview to the Telegraph where he explains it's all going very badly but he will no doubt win regardless so that's alright then.
He confirms Ukr manpower shortage, Russia has 650,000 troops in Ukraine and their big offensive has already started and also confirmed Russia can fire up to 40,000 shells a day to Ukraine's 4,000.
WHAT?? Does Putin really think he's actually winning this, I mean come on.
He's only got a 10 to 1 artillery advantage, at least a 8 to 1 kill advantage, equipment production that out strips all the west combined by x 3, has more volunteers each month than Ukraine can snatch off the street and has been pushing Ukraine backwards across the whole 2,000km frontline for months now.
Winning? - pfft.

EU/UK; want the war to escalate in order to get the US to reengage or they'll have to deal with Putin all on their own - after calling him all those nasty names.
Kellogg/neocons; want a frozen conflict with a US backstop. EU/UK occupying the west, Ukrainians in the centre and Russia blocked in in the east. Kellogg doesn't seem bright enough to foresee Zelensky will just trigger the backstop to finally get US boots on the ground. Also doesn't realise Ukraine is losing or that Putin has already said 50,000 times there will be no freeze.
Putin; the current deal on offer (no NATO & give us the 4 oblasts) but knows Zelensky won't take it. So Putin will keep the steamroller going until the Ukrainian army collapses which should come before the end of this year if not by the end of the summer.
If Putin's current demand is rejected then his next will be to add a land corridor on Ukraine's southern coast all the way to the Moldovan border including the city of Odessa.
Sorted by deal on the table or by the battle on the field, either way.
** Interesting side note. The new Russian hypersonic 'Oreshnik' missile system which was demonstrated in Ukraine some 6 months ago has been in full production and expected to be unleashed on the battlefields in numbers sometime around mid summer.
Reminder that no actual photo/video of the result of the Oreshnik strike was ever released by Ukraine.
Trump does know he doesn't hold any cards over Putin but will bluster anyway.

Some interesting new stats from Russia on the causes of Russian casualties;
75% Russian casualties caused by Ukrainian drones.
20% by artillery.
Just 4% caused by Ukrainian small arms fire.
Big reduction in artillery casualties (down from 80%) partly because Ukraine is running out of them, no more deliveries of the US 777s, their barrels wear out quickly and the artillery pieces itself went out of production even before the Ukraine conflict begun.
Russia on the other hand still have a full quota of artillery according to the Ukrainian army chief who said in an interview Russia were capable of firing 40,000 rounds a day.
Interesting also that bullets account for only 4% considering they've fired over a billion of them.
Biden's war was lost before Trump even took over but, thanks to plain propaganda, the majority in the west had not realised it.
Correcting that should have been Trump's first mission but I'm not sure he realised it himself.
He's since learnt that Putin is not losing but winning and holds all the cards.
He's since learnt that short of starting WW3 there's nothing he can do about it.

Ukrainian politician suggests that Ukrainian intel agency deliberately leaked that the 117th brigade were holding a medal awards ceremony in Sumy city that was subsequently missile attacked by Russia.
The suggestion being that Ukrainian intel wanted a mass civilian casualty event they could blame on Russia.
That the gathering was even allowed to go ahead in the middle of a city just 30km from the Russian border, especially after it was known it's details had been leaked in advance, have angered many in Ukraine.
Russia says their sources tell them over 60 high ranking Ukrainian military personal were killed in the attack. Regretfully, many civilians were also killed.

EU/UK politicians are now completely trapped in their own narrative and don't even seem to understand why Putin won't just accept Zelensky's peace plan offer (Russia's surrender).
Russians have been battling for years and have got nowhere. Therefore, the war must be in stalemate, no?
In recent wars the west only looked at territorial gains and happily let the enemy run away to fight again another day (Afghanistan and Iraq).
But Russia's fighting a war of attrition. Putin's goals are the demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine and Russia is achieving this by the systematic destruction of equipment and fighting men.
The territory is not important, the body bag count is.
Wars fought this way don't tend to have any follow up insurgency after war's end, simply because there's not enough opposition left alive to start one (think Germany after WW2).
At the current Russian kill rate (between 10:1 and 20:1) in due course the Ukrainian army will run out of men and collapse. This is why the manpower issue has become increasingly critical to Zelensky and why he needs NATO troops before it's too late.
Note that the posted Ukrainian casualty figures for Ukraine and Russian are pure fantasy but seem to be believed by western politicians and media without second thought.
Facts are that long range fires account for 80% of casualties, and both sides admit Russia has a 10:1 fires advantage. Leaked US intel also estimates the Russian kill rate at 10:1.
There have been big increases in the number of Russian volunteers over the last few months, the reason being is to take advantage of the big pay outs for sign up and just catching the end of the conflict.
Many on the Russian side are saying the hot war will over before the end of the year, either via negotiations, or if needs must, on the battlefield.
The Ukrainian army is simply running out of set defensive positions and the personnel to man them.
