In the article “The UniEMA: A Universal Exponential Moving Average” in this issue,
Igor Durkin presents a universal EMA designed to manage the tradeoff between lag and noise. The approach consolidates EMA, DEMA, TEMA, and related smoothing methods into a single indicator controlled by four parameters. The EasyLanguage implementation contains two functions and two corresponding indicators. The UniEMA indicator plots a single universal EMA line, while the UniEMA Cascade indicator plots intermediate smoothing stages as a cascade. The UniEMA indicator can be applied multiple times with different inputs to compare varying degrees of smoothing and observe crossovers as turning points.
Igor Durkin has been developing indicators and trading
systems for over two decades, best known as igorad on
Forex-TSD (mql5.com), where he was the lead developer
of indicators and expert advisors from 2006 to 2010, and
on newdigital-world.com. He is the original author of Al
lAverages, a public indicator library collecting 47 moving
average types—many of them UniEMA instantiations—in
continuous development since the mid-2000s, as well as
NonLagMA, StepMA, the LabTrend family, and Multi
Dimensional Fractals. He is the founder of TrendLaboratory
(trendlaboratory.net), where UniEMA and related
tools are documented and maintained.
