Witkoff meeting with Putin.

Lasted 3-4 hours. 3 day capital to capital ceasefire agreed. This was going to happen anyway as Russia has always respected western diplomats being in Kiev and avert any drone or missile attacks during that period.

Yuri Ushakov described the talks as being ‘comfortable’ but also ‘extremely frank’ which is usually diplomatic speak for a shouting match but probably not likely in this case.

‘No agreement over territory issues’ is no surprise but it seems there were extended talks on ‘major, mutually beneficial Russian-American economic projects’ which sounds like a typical fake Trump bribe which Putin must have seen a dozen times over the last 2 years.

‘Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that while it was a productive first exchange of views where "some things were accepted, others were marked as unacceptable," no final breakthrough was achieved’.

The ‘acceptable’ was the 3 day ceasefire to allow the US diplomats to travel, the ‘unacceptable’ was likely everything else.

Witkoff and Kushner now head to Kiev with counter proposals which Zelensky will reject but with caveats as he doesn’t want to piss Trump off too much.

It’s Trump that really needs this deal now before the US midterm elections, that’s the only reason these meetings are happening at all.

Putin has every intention to just keep rolling onward on the battlefield while Zelensky and all his cronies will stay put so long as the cash keeps flowing.

You’ll know when something real is about to happen because all the cash will be loaded into suitcases and they’ll be dashing for the exits.

Well that went about as well as expected.

The latest Russia Ukraine diplomatic process inspired by a desperate Trump admin went absolutely nowhere though with a few interesting disclosures.

Surprisingly, to me anyway, was Putin’s offer to stop if the Ukraine army pulled out of the last remaining 15% of the Donbas not already occupied by the Russians. That was basically the offer from 2 years ago though the Russians seemed to indicate that this was the last time that offer would be still on the table.

But there was plenty else that Zelensky was likely to object to so it probably didn’t matter.

Russia also demanded a ban on Ukraine having medium and long range attack weapons. There seemed to be no mention of Ukraine going back to being a neutral state and Putin said that after the fighting stopped in the Donbas Russia would pursue demilitarisation and denazification of the rest of Ukraine by diplomatic means.

So that was basically the counter proposal Witkoff took to Kiev where Zelensky had assembled all his European warmonger fanclub members to look over Putin’s proposal which was as big a clue as needed to tell you which way this was going to go.

Afterwards Zelensky said he now expected the war to continue into winter and seems to have spent the meeting with Witkoff badgering him for more money, more missiles, a new ‘winter package of support’, and security guarantees, so more support from the US to keep the war going basically.

And then it was back to the usual Zelensky bullshit.

With all this fictitious new US support Russia should be ready to negotiate a ‘fair peace’ (Russian surrender) by spring or summer of 2027 Zelensky tells us.

This of course is all a massive blow to Zelensky’s delusional fantasy world where Russia was supposed to surrender before winter of this year.

This nonsense was totally foreseeable but I suppose Putin needed to go through the motions for the sake of world opinion, but it must be clear now that the Russians will probably need to haul this deranged Ukraine government out of Kiev by force.

Next step is the Russian parliamentary elections where Putin is expected to receive a public mandate to pursue the war with greater force and urgency.

Before that though the Russians have already started moving large numbers of military aircraft where they were stored in east Russia to west Russia now that Ukrainian and NATO’s air defence capability has been exhausted.

And escalation in the Iran US war. Iran has fired an anti-ship specific ballistic missile at a destroyer of the US fleet in the Gulf of Oman which they say is a missile test. The US navy said they performed evasive manoeuvres and have moved further back out of the immediate region.

This missile is a fully modern type not used before and has air defence avoidance capabilities and is certainly able to severely damage a US warship if it scores a hit. If that happens the push for massive US escalation would be hard for Trump to resist.

All signs point to a Russian escalation on the battlefront. Ukraine has seen it too which led them to assume a major mobilisation was about to be implemented by the Russians though Putin has denied it.

Russia certainly has the choice, over a million contract soldiers in the Russian army have served their time and been released over the last 4 years under the proviso that they could be recalled if needed. So that’s over a million experienced men who would only need basic catch-up training before engagement ready and waiting.

The Russians though, having been very cautious for the last 4 years are unlikely to go gung-ho all of a sudden. And winter is coming, winter means fog which is a problem for drones but artillery works just fine in bad weather. The muddy season is also coming which makes movement difficult but after the freeze and the ground hardens is when the Russians like to move onto big cities and set up their cauldrons.

And this year they have a lot to choose from, Zaporizhzhia, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Sumy, Kharkiv. The Russians themselves are saying they expect to have the last 3 cities within the Donbas taken by the end of January or February.

The Russians have also been testing their new Arena anti-drone active vehicle armour, active armour fires before being hit not after (reactive). In field testing with just 12 of these units the tanks and mine clearing units were taking 30-40 drone hits before stopping or turning around. There is room aboard for a lot more than just 12.

Meanwhile the constant drone and missile attacks on Kiev continue with a far greater range of target choices thanks to Zelensky initiating the expansion of target types. And with no air defences the Russians are now operating a ‘carousel’ system where the drones are arriving in a constant stream and rotate over the city looking for targets

Ukraine losses and satellite surveys of Ukrainian war cemeteries (the ones with all the flags) show 2.5 million dead. There are 300,000 missing and 400,000 AWOL, except they’re probably dead as well. In a police state where the authorities are constantly roaming the streets checking papers and picking people up it’s hard to be missing or hide for long. But at least the Ukrainian government doesn’t have to pay the death compensation payments so there is that.

The 2026 Russian legislative election to the State Duma is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 20 September 2026. There will be the inevitable accusations of rigging from the west despite the international observer reports afterwards but will there be any mass street demonstrations?
