Hi everyone,

I'd like to ask a question to which I can't find the answer.

Since I started trading in August 2021 I have only used MT4.

Since a few days I have taken a PropFirm challenge and I have to use cTrader to open
my trades with PropFirm. I also like cTrader and I find it rather cool to use.

But today I just noticed a strange detail.

My EMAs and indicators are not displayed in the same place in Tradingview and on MT4 and cTrader.

I've just checked on Tradingview and there, too, there's a difference between TV and MT4.

To put it simply, cTrader and Tradingview are identical to each other, but different from MT4.

On the 3 charts attached my settings are the same.

• Exponential MA200 (white)
• Exponential MA633 (yellow).

Does anyone know why the display is not the same on MT4?
And what is the correct display?
Or have I set up my MT4 incorrectly?

I don't know what to think.

It's because Tradingview doesn’t use your broker for their pricing. They use brokers which provide slightly different pricing to your broker's data.

One of the possible reasons: for a big period of MA
you should have sufficiently many candles / bars in the chart to draw MA properly.
So, one of the charts can simply be too short.

I believe Wojtek has figured it out.

The drastic difference in EMA display is caused by different length charts (historical bars) on display as well as the fact that Tradingview use different brokers for their data too.

yes the EMA uses previous MA output to compute the actual EMA

this means that the ema will slowly get to its real value from 0

if you don't have enough bars to compute the EMA before the period you're interested in you're gonna have false values
which is what TV does I believe
