Ukraine's manpower shortage is causing serious problems highlighted recently when a batch of air defence missiles was delivered to an AD unit that no longer had anyone able to operate them. The men had all been given a rifle and sent to the front.
Zelensky is now calling for new talks next week with Trump and the European leadership while admitting Ukraine is not going to retrieve lost territory any time soon.
Zelensky's emphasis now seems to be on security guarantees rather than ceasefires though they are just as unrealistic.
He’s calling for guaranteed supplies of western weapons and a rebuilding of the Ukrainian army.
He’s calling for NATO article 5 ‘type’ guarantees from NATO.
And he’s calling for massive sanctions on Russia and that he should be given their frozen assets.
These demands just guarantee Russia will keep going and show that Zelensky still doesn't understand he's not in a position to demand anything.
The delusion is that if the west does all this then everything will be fine forgetting that the Russians are in the driving seat not NATO or the EU/UK or Trump.
The Russians will not be bothered by any of Zelensky’s demands, they will just keep rolling on. The west has already failed and if they want to send their own troops as well to try to stop the Russians good luck with that.
There is increasing talk of when the conflict ends there will be a partition and so therefore there will also need to be a buffer zone, and if so who will man it? The FT is saying Trump is considering China.
Putin will not allow NATO troops into Ukraine no matter what, the prospect of NATO troops in Ukraine leading to WW3 is very high.
The fact that this topic is even being discussed indicates that parties recognise Russia is not really interested in taking over the whole of Ukraine after all.
The reality is that a buffer is inevitable but where will it be?
Along the current frontline (plus all of Donetsk) if Zelensky agrees to Russian terms now.
Along the Dnipro river if Zelensky doesn’t, or worse still for Ukraine, along the old borders of Novorossiya (includes Odessa, Kharkov and Sumy).
Those are the only 3 options available to Ukraine and the west, which one it will be depends solely on how long it takes Ukraine and the west to make up their minds.

Nothing happening on the diplomatic front. Trump is presumably waiting out his 2 week deadline though he has admitted the threatened sanctions on Russia won’t work and India and China have ignored Trump's threats of increased tariffs.
Zelensky and the EU/UK are still holding to unrealistic and unworkable demands.
So the Russian army just continues devouring Ukrainian troops and the Ukrainian army continues kidnapping new recruits off the streets.
EU number 2 Karen Callus seems to have just discovered the cost of the commitment she happily signed up for, taking over the funding of Project Ukraine, and she is shocked she says.
Obviously the $1 billion a month for Ukraine's basic needs plus $2 billion a month minimum for the military doesn’t exist and will need to be borrowed which should push the debt burden of EU countries into a death spiral.
Western Europe's only hope is if the Russians get a move on. Reminder that Karen, Ursula, Starmer, Macron and Merz are all hand picked idiots tasked with bankrupting western democracies for the Davos elites. Cause the people of western Europe enough pain and they will be begging for the elites and their neo-Chinese style authoritarianism to come and save them.
Meanwhile Ursula van der Moron, the EU number 1, talks of great plans of security guarantees for Ukraine in the form of a first line of defence being a rebuilt Ukrainian army, a second line of NATO troops and a third line being western Europe itself.
But that can only happen if the Russians and the Americans agree to it, which they definitely will not, so why is this idiot even wasting her breath? The reason is that the European leadership just does not want the war to end. That would lead to the US pulling out of Europe and that frightens them, an ongoing conflict far to the east keeping the US in Europe is a much better option (for them) than any kind of peace.

Great news, the Europeans are going to have another meeting (#54?) to chat about all their dreams and fantasies.
Like how the Russians are going to surrender and pay trillions in reparations and hand over all their leaders to the international court.
And then how the Europeans will rebuild the Ukrainian army and flood Ukraine with NATO troops.
They will pat each other on the back and say ‘good meeting’. But they won’t present the final plan to Putin or Trump, oh no, presumably out of a sense of mercy in case they might die laughing reading it.
They will tell the people of Europe that continuing the conflict is necessary for our security to stop the Russians coming to invade Western Europe.
Putin is a “predator” and an "ogre" and will be stomping across Europe eating babies or something.
But that would of course be forgetting that Europe has a nuclear deterrent to prevent that very occurrence.
Russia won't send an army into Western Europe for the exact same reason Western Europe won't invade Russia.
That’s why the west went to all the trouble of setting up the ‘colour revolution’ in Ukraine (straight from the CIA playbook) and then set them up as a military proxy.
