I always try to think of things they'd personally like. For women, I stick with things like fancy candles, good blankets, makeup items, gift cards to places they like or restaurants, etc.

My husband usually picks out the manly presents, he gets tools mostly but it also depends on the person. I think gift cards paired with something else is always a good idea.
