General round up as winter comes to an end, then there will be a thaw and mud before the spring dry out.

In Zaparozia the Russians continue to make headway from south to north in the western sector, and in the eastern sector the Russians continue to make ground from east to west.

Here they seem unconcerned with the Ukrainian claim of counter attacks from the north.

And in the Sumy oblast the Russians have entered a large forest that runs right up to Sumy city.

Further south and the Russians are also not far from Kharkov city.

Closing in on these 3 big Ukrainian cities is going to cause tough decisions on man power placement for the AFU.

Meanwhile the peace talks seem to have stopped altogether, they were supposed to restart earlier this week but nothing happened. Some commentators are suggesting that Witkoff is not so much concerned with peace but more interested in securing US access to Russian oil reserves in a co-development and profit sharing role.

The missiles keep flying, the Dutch have reportedly taken over production of the Ukrainian Flamingo missile after production sites in Ukraine were destroyed. The Flamingo missile is very new and the Russian air defence still has not dialled in proper targeting which usually takes a couple of weeks as did the Storm Shadows and others.

However the huge imbalance in missile production in Russia's favour continues. Of note is the new Russian tactic of instead of launching say 400 drones and 5 ballistic or cruise missiles the Russians are now routinely launching 25+ missiles with the drones nightly. Often launching 5 on a single power station guaranteeing its total destruction rather than just damaging it.

And at the EU Zelensky gets a 2 minute standing ovation for demanding the EU hurry up and finance his war, at least now you know who the EU is working for and it’s definitely not you.

Zelensky also had a call with Trump, the US said Trump told Zelensky he wanted the war ended as soon as possible, Zelensky said Trump said he wanted the war ended by the end of the year.

A number of interesting new studies on the conflict's casualty numbers is very revealing.

Alexander Grable looked at the officially released figures of amputations in the armies and showed a ratio of 28 Ukrainian to 1 Russian. The amputees ratio is historically similar to the death rates in wars.

It is also similar to the overall bodies exchange rate, another which was completed a few days ago where 1000 Ukrainians were exchanged for around 35 Russian. The number was similar to all the exchanges that took place over the last year.

Of course Western media says that the disparity is due to the fact that the Russians are going forward and so are able to pick up more bodies.

The media also says the Russians are going forward so slowly that it will take them 4 years to reach Kiev, yet they will also be marching on Berlin by 2030.

Grable reverts to the safe western narrative by saying that he estimates that the 28 to 1 should be reduced to 10 to 1 given that Russian medical care is practically mediaeval and Ukrainian was NATO standard, which is both completely false.

Ukraine medics complain constantly of their inability to remove casualties from the battlefield in a timely manner, if at all, while Russia's medical care is often referenced as being of a very high standard.

Another report, this from the anti Putin outlet Medusa, says that the Russian army changed the way they collate casualty data early in 2025.

They now lump the KIA, MIA, and wounded, even lightly wounded, into 1 figure. This, the report says, caused a bump upwards in the casualty data and has given Western intel a false impression as to the Russian death toll which they pass straight onto the western media outlets.

Influential US journal Foreign Affairs is now reporting for the first time that Ukraine is in fact losing the conflict after all.

They say that the balance of power has shifted and now the Russians have superiority in men and equipment and that Ukraine will need to cede land to avoid a major defeat. This could be signalling a major shift in the western narrative as reality finally starts to break down the doors of collective delusion.

The promise of the Russian economic collapse and the fake casualty rates of the Russian army just can't be maintained anymore as the Russian army is about to complete the capture of Donesk.

As I pointed out some weeks ago, after Konstantinovka which is currently being taken, then there is only the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk left, both of which lay in a valley overlooked by hills and were not ever considered defenceable by the Ukrainians if the Russians got to occupy the high ground.

And latest news is that Israel has just launched an air attack on Iran, not sure that was supposed to be in the script, maybe Israel is trying to force Trump’s hand since he has been showing reluctance to actually strike. We shall see.

Military Chronicle: What can Iran do besides blocking the Strait of Hormuz?

Tehran could launch a systemic destruction of the oil and gas infrastructure of the Persian Gulf countries. The logic is simple: if the mere threat of large-scale consequences can force the US to slow down, then that's precisely what needs to be done.
And the closer Iran gets to the tipping point, the greater its willingness to take risks. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and a number of other states, with the exception of Oman, are already perceived in Tehran as parties to the conflict.
Key oil fields and export terminals are within range of Iranian short-range missiles, and in some cases, even artillery fire from the coast. An additional factor is the presence of Shiite populations in some of these areas, which creates the potential for internal destabilization.
The worst-case scenario is that combined missile and drone strikes, coupled with the actions of proxy groups, lead to the burning of wells and the destruction or damage of both refining facilities and oil terminals.

There's a historical precedent: in 1991, while retreating from Kuwait, Iraqi troops set fire to oil fields, and it took almost a year to extinguish them.

If markets begin pricing this risk, first Brent, then WTI, could easily rise well above $100 per barrel.

Then comes the next layer of the problem. If Hormuz is effectively paralyzed for an extended period, and supplies from the region are limited, the US could theoretically impose export restrictions on its own oil and gas to maintain domestic prices before the midterm elections.

In that case, Europe would be in an extremely vulnerable position: Russian supplies are limited or eliminated altogether, Middle Eastern supplies are under threat, and American supplies are in doubt. Then the energy crisis ceases to be regional and becomes global.
