but rather in stalling for time. Vitkov, probably unrealistic,
portrayed the situation and his talks in Moscow in rosy tones,
and now they're being corrected.
Trump had painted himself into a corner and needed to get himself out before the deadline he himself imposed.

He sent Witkoff on a hopeless mission that Trump talked up then let down to give himself an extension.

Russia is keen on a quick agreement but on their terms not Zelensky's. Zelensky won't come to terms so long as the money keeps flowing and the Europeans will bankrupt themselves trying to keep it flowing because keeping the conflict going is the only thing keeping the Americans in Europe.

Russia won't achieve their goals in 90 days but the Ukrainian army may well be in chaos by then. At some point the Russians will stop moving west, the Dnieper river or the old Novorossiya borders, any further west is a hostile population so that's where the conflict will freeze.

By then Zelensky should be gone and a Ukraine government in place able to strike a deal for at least a temporary peace. The US and European neocons will continue to lust after Russia's natural resources but there'll be not much they can do about it by then (unless they've got a dirty trick up their sleeve).

Trump's deadline came and went without a murmur. The ball is now firmly back in โ€ฆ Lyndsey Graham's court.

He was the one who started all this bullshit in the first place, but was it malicious or is he just plain stupid, we may never know.

The Trump MO is to bullshit first then come on all reasonable once you have their attention, Trump threatened 100% sanctions during the trade wars but was always going to back down to 20%.

Graham said 'I see you and raise you 500%' to threaten Russia, China and India. Trump must have wondered what the hell he was doing.

500% (even 100%) would cripple world trade, disrupt the oil market and be disastrous to the US economy.

And Graham did actually have senate backing which just goes to show that your average US senator is a clown.

So Trump averted that scenario, but only temporarily, by setting a deadline then withdrawing it by setting up a possible meeting with Putin. If a meeting takes place Putin will tell Trump about the core issues, as usual. And Trump won't hear a word of it, as usual.

The more important point is what will the rabid neocons do next.

Meanwhile 5 Ukrainian cities (Pokrovsk, Kramatorsk, Kostantynivka, Kupyansk, Lyman) are being surrounded by the Russians as they steam roller on westward. There really is nothing can stop them (except an all out nuclear war).

Thousands of Ukrainian troops will be trapped if they don't escape soon, knowing Zelensky's refusal to allow retreats their fate is probably sealed.

NATO is reporting that Russia has moved 100,000 troops into Belarus to take part in planned military drills. Belarus was used by the Russian as a launch point to attack Kiev back in 2022.

Trump is still pretending that the whole conflict is just about territory, the sight of a Nobel Peace Prize is blinding him. The WSJ reports Putin will stop the conflict in exchange for east Ukraine and that Trump is working toward this goal. But this is just half of Putin's deal offered in Istanbul.

The Russians have said over and over that the core issues need to be resolved before they will stop. If the causes are not resolved they know the whole shit show will just start up again at a latter date.

Russia knows now it can achieve it's objectives on the battlefield if not at the negotiating table.

Russia is demilitarising Ukraine by killing all their soldiers. Russia can protect Russian speakers in Ukraine by taking over the territory where they live. Russia can denazify by regime change in taking Kiev. And leaving a rump state in west Ukraine that will be of no interest to NATO (or the EU).

So, one way or the other, job done.

Trump, the neocons and western European leaders are determined to ignore the obvious and concentrate on their own made up delusional narratives. That's why it's so important they don't to listen to Putin.

Trump by now is in no doubt that Russia, China and India have emphatically rejected his sanctions/tariffs threat and deadline. There's speculation now that Trump has flipped and is working with Putin against Zelensky.

After Trump and Zelensky tried to force Putin into the unconditional ceasefire deal Trump now seems to have teamed up with Putin to force Zelensky into a territory swap deal.

The rumour is that Trump and Putin are working on a deal to then hand to Zelensky to sign, and if he doesn't Trump could threaten to shut down all US involvement in Ukraine.

Zelensky is said to be in a panic calling up European leaders looking for support and to try to get them to intervene and influence Trump.

One problem is the root causes issue that Putin will expect movement on. Trump still only talking territory though he has previously spoken about no NATO for Ukraine.

The second problem is Zelensky and the Europeans who are freaking out at the prospect of a turnaround.

Their problem though is that they're both dependent on US money and weapons. Europe can't afford the long term funding of Ukraine and Europe's military industrial complex is in tatters. 20 years of lack of investment and a dependency on US base weapons systems.

The Europeans have taken political control of NATO. Trump says no NATO for Ukraine, Rutte says yes NATO for Ukraine. But the Europeans don't pay for NATO so that's not going to end well.

Zelensky will only face a worse deal later if he rejects this one but by then he will have retired to spend more time with his money anyway, so he's unlikely to agree to anything other than the completely unobtainable 'fair and just' Russian surrender.

Trump has given himself a week to sort something out but it's still a long shot. His Nobel Peace Prize hangs in the balance.

Re: WW3 Countdown

Zelensky, the European leadership and the neocons have come out to shoot down any US/Russian initiative to end the conflict before it's even been tabled.

Their own proposals? Return to 2014 borders, fantasy. Ukraine's sovereignty, laughable fantasy (it's a US vassal). Security guarantees (join NATO), fantasy. Territorial integrity, fantasy (way too late for that). Ukrainian 'freedom of choice', fantasy. Defeat of Russia, fantasy.

They know they have failed to defeat the Russians on the battlefield and failed to destroy the Russian economy.

They must also know that Ukraine no longer has the resources or the manpower to halt the Russian advance westward.

They also know the NATO has run out of military supplies to send to Ukraine.

They also know that the populations of the west will not support any increased NATO engagement in the war on the ground.

So the only thing they can hope for now is a freeze and time to prepare for the next round.

Which is why Russia will not agree to any ceasefire until they have achieved their core objectives, they are winning after all.

Those objectives basically are to leave Ukraine in a position where it could no longer be used by the west to threaten Russia. Or at least obtain a big enough buffer zone to allow the Russians time to counter any air or ground offensive launched against them.

The west could save what's left of Ukraine by guaranteeing Ukraine's neutrality but that would be sacrificing their own core objectives which is for Ukraine to be a vassal and be used to threaten Russia whenever needed (the whole colour revolution in Moscow idea is out the window by now).

So the end result can only be partitioning, the western backed Ukrainian forces pushed back enough to be a lesser threat but retaining some presence in west Ukraine where they, not the Russians, have more solid support from the local population.

Currently the decision is between Ukraine losing 4 oblasts now or 8 later and that's not going to change (unless to make it 12 later).

Ukrainians themselves have no say in the matter. In the end Zelensky will just run away with all his money and eastern Ukraine will be covered in Russian air defence batteries.
