Trump stops major weapons shipments to Ukrainebecause of the serious depletion of US stockpiles. These weapons are sitting in Poland already, waiting for transport to Ukraine – not any longer.
Trump not only not issuing more aid but has stopped that which was already authorised to go from Biden's aid program.
Reality Check; some numbers (get your calculators out).
US produces some 550 Patriot air defence missiles per year.
At least 2 Patriots are fired at each incoming target (where available).
Russia are now firing 500 missiles and long-range drones into Ukraine per day.
And, 'during a the 12-day war with Iran, the US expended 15-20% of it's THAAD air defence arsenal supporting Israel.'
'Highlighting both the high operational demand and the relatively slow pace at which these interceptors can be replenished. Had the war continued another two weeks, it is likely that the US would have exhausted its (total) supply of THAADs.'
NATO has run out of military stores, that was the (Russian) idea. It's called a war of attrition and NATO has lost.
If the US does not stop now then it's own strategic defence will become severely compromised and with so many other enemies about it cannot afford that.
Of course the EU/UK became severely compromised a long time ago and have been relying on the US ever since.
What are the types of weapons that have been stopped? All missiles, rockets and artillery shells – so just all the most important stuff then.
No wonder the west and Ukraine were so desperate for Russia to agree a ceasefire.
Note that Macron was pushed by western leaders to phone call Putin and ask again for a ceasefire earlier on Wednesday. Putin said thank you very much for your generous offer, but eh, no thanks.
US news outlets released the news of the sudden delivery stop later the same day (European pm, US am) which suggests the European leaders knew the US announcement was coming and were trying to get Putin to agree a ceasefire before it happened and stop the US needing to make it.
European leaders are very aware that there's very little chance that once stopped the weapons shipments will ever resume again or any new aid package be proposed, it will take YEARS for the US to rebuild it's stock pile, so this presumably marks the start of a permanent US pull out.
Reminder that the makers of Patriot missiles Raytheon said a couple of years ago that if they hired some extra workers they might be able to add an extra 60 missiles to the 550 total per year.
Does anyone still seriously think that the US (or NATO) were ever really interested in getting into a hot war with Russia to save the Donbas?
Never just listen to what politicians and their media mouthpieces say, watch what they actually do.

Word is that Macron is proud that his call to Putin was a 2 hour nuisance call in which he repeated all the old western tropes about how mean old Russia attacked poor li'll Ukraine for no reason, how it had nothing to do about NATO whatsoever, on and on.
He then said 'how about a ceasefire?'
Putin apparently replied explaining the root causes of the conflict and said no to the ceasefire as it had always been just a tactic to rearm in the past (not knowing the US no new weapons announcement coming).
After that announcement Trump calls Putin asking for him to agree a ceasefire. The early comments say Trump got the same reply as Macron. There is no word yet as to if Trump offered or threatened anything new to get agreement.
Trump is lining up a Israel/Hamas ceasefire and presumably was looking for a double win.
Contemporary western European leaders will never get Putin and will always hate him. Modern western leaders know the game.
The game is to promise anything in order to get elected, you then do whatever 'the money' tells you to do no matter how traitorous to your own country that might be. And when you get voted out, 'the money' gives you a great new job in some big international organisation with a huge salary for the rest of your life.
Simple, but Putin won't play, and that's why they hate him.
So what will happen in the conflict now?
Ukraine cannot survive without US missiles (especially Patriots), rockets and shells.
“Air defence won't win a war - but the absence of it will lose one fast”. Tom Karako
Ukraine and EU/UK are still in shock and have said nothing.
There is probably no chance that full scale weapons shipments will ever resume.
There can be no chance now that NATO could ever send troops, no matter what.
Russia has a huge weapons and manpower stockpile to play with.
Putin had previously warned that the 'we will only take the 4 regions and Crimea' offer was only on the table until mid summer. He may take that off the table now.
The fighting was only expected to last up to 6 months longer without a new aid package, but now, with the stopping of deliveries of the old one, that figure is probably down to 1 month.
Obviously Zelensky must agree terms now but the ultra nationalist Azov brigades and others have been building up their numbers and will not agree or participate with any kind of a surrender.
Ukraine IS going to be split apart, it's just a question of where, at the 4 eastern regions, at the Dnipro river, or Ukraine being completely fragmented with Russia taking 2/3rds and Ukraine's western neighbours picking over what's left.
Summary of current situation from pro-Ukrainian German reporter Julian Röpcke as Germany takes over the role of chief provider to Ukraine.
(auto-translated)
After two days in Ukraine, numerous discussions, and yesterday's Trump decision, here is another brief military-political update.
Behind the facade of unity, shared values, and goals, profound differences between the leading players are revealed.
Let's start with the Ukrainian government. It is emphasizing successes in the Sumy region and portraying the recapture of a single village as the failure of a large-scale Russian offensive, in which 50,000 soldiers were allegedly involved. However, the available images suggest a tenth of that number.
At the same time, the ongoing loss of the Donetsk region is hardly being discussed anymore—at least not in discussions with Western partners.
In fact, the Ukrainian army is currently losing large parts of the south and is now fighting on the territory of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
The cities of Toretsk and Chasiv Yar have effectively fallen to the Russian armed forces, without this being openly communicated. Russia is now advancing on Kostiantynivka from three sides – a city that, as recently as September 2024, was considered the central supply center for the entire central front.
President Zelenskyy publicly emphasizes that Germany is now Ukraine's largest supporter. Accordingly, Germany is appearing friendly toward the factually inadequate German aid, which has only minimally increased since the US withdrawal.
Zelenskyy repeats the figures embellished by Berlin (over nine billion euros in military aid this year) and speaks of new IRIS-T systems – statements that are relativized behind closed doors on the German side.
The result has been a change in tone between Merz and Scholz, at most – but not the structural helplessness of the German government on Ukraine and Russia issues
Instead of taking decisive action themselves, they point to industry, shift responsibility to German arms companies, and retreat to the position of wanting to offer "financial support." Sending an MDBA representative instead of the requested Taurus cruise missiles is the current culmination of this political self-deception.
For weeks, government officials at the highest levels have been saying that the US is on the verge of a course correction—the Trump administration has recognized the seriousness of the situation, and the NATO summit signaled unity. But all of this hovers between wishful thinking and denial of reality.
In reality, the US will not impose serious sanctions against Russia and is increasingly withdrawing from military support to Ukraine. What has been looming since 2016 and has become a bitter reality since 2022 continues to be shrugged off as regrettable but inevitable.
Ukraine is currently losing an area the size of Berlin roughly every two months – and there is no realistic plan in Kyiv, Berlin, Brussels, or Washington to stop the Russian advance. At the same time, Russian air superiority over Ukrainian cities is more pronounced than ever before. This is reflected in hundreds of weekly drone strikes on critical infrastructure across the country.

Trump may well have been hoping Putin would accept a ceasefire given that the US was stopping arms to Ukraine.
Putin had demanded a total western stop as a condition during any ceasefire though EU/UK would if they could.
But anyway Putin said no to Trump.
The US had already said no to selling patriots to Zelensky. Germany then offered to buy patriots for Zelensky but the US again said no, they just didn't have any to spare. Reminder that Rubio said as much in an interview back in May.
But anyway, Trump then spoke to Zelensky on Friday and apparently Ukraine really does need some patriot missiles, so err, Trump said he would see if he can find some?
Zelensky changes the language, no longer says there must be a 'fair and just' peace but is now just looking for a 'noble' peace.
Moron EU official Kaja Kallas pestered China's Wang Yi about stopping China aid to Russia to the point where normally mild Wang Yi angrily responded that China was not aiding Russia but they definitely would if it looked like Russia was losing.
Well done dickhead Kallas and her amazing diplomatic skills pushing China into an even more pro Russian stance than they were before when she was actually trying to do the opposite.
I guess that might be why European leaders really don't want her as their rep talking to the Russians (sarcasm++).
Reminder that the EU say they are not a party to the conflict while sending tanks and howitzers to Ukraine but say China is breaking sanctions they never agreed to for sending duel use items such as washing machines and laptops to Russia.
While all eyes are on Russia's massive missile and drone attacks of at least equal importance is the increasing speed of the Ukrainian retreat across the battlefronts.
In just 4 days of July Russia has captured over 100sqkm compared to 550 for the whole of June which itself was the biggest month of the year so far. (Figures calculated from pro Ukraine DeepState maps)
Meanwhile, the army within an army, the ultra nationalist, what were the Azov Brigade, now the 3rd Army Corps continues to grow.
Reminder that this corps does not take orders from Zelensky, in fact (on video) offerred to kill him he he ever issued orders they did not like.
