US NFP Shock: Jobs Fall by 23K as Labor Market Weakens

1
The U.S. labor market delivered a major surprise in July, with nonfarm payroll employment falling by 23,000 jobs, sharply missing expectations for job growth. The unemployment rate, however, edged lower to 4.1%, while wage growth also slowed.

What Did the July NFP Report Show?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, total nonfarm payroll employment declined by 23,000 in July. The result marks a significant slowdown compared with the average monthly gain of 34,000 over the previous 12 months.

The weakness was concentrated in several areas. Local government education lost 50,000 jobs, while retail trade declined by 19,000. Financial activities also continued to weaken, losing 14,000 jobs. Healthcare remained one of the stronger areas, adding 22,000 positions.

The unemployment rate fell from 4.2% to 4.1%, while the labor-force participation rate slipped to 61.4%. This combination is important because the lower unemployment rate does not necessarily indicate a stronger labor market when participation is also declining.

What Traders Should Watch Next

The initial market reaction to NFP can be extremely volatile. Instead of focusing only on the headline payroll number, traders should monitor U.S. Treasury yields, the Dollar Index, gold, major USD pairs, and equity indices as the market digests the complete report.

The key question now is whether today's employment weakness represents a temporary slowdown or the beginning of a broader deterioration in the U.S. labor market.

It looks very nice.
In the field of education of local authorities. It's hard for me to say anything, it's a mix of hot and triangular (summer, everything's fine).
In retail, this is great, automation is bearing fruit.
Financial activity is twice as good.
Healthcare is great.
The rest went to harvest apples, berries, and vegetables.

The key now is how the market interprets the labor-market weakness alongside upcoming inflation and Fed signals. This could create increased volatility across USD pairs and Gold.
