CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Police said Thursday that several dozen people are believed to have died and about 100 injured, most of them seriously, in a bar fire in the Swiss Alps during New Year's Eve celebrations.

The exact death toll from the Le Constellation bar fire is not yet available.

Béatrice Pilloud, the attorney general for the canton of Valais, said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire. Experts have not yet been able to enter the wreckage.

Police said they could not yet provide a more precise estimate of the fire's death toll.

According to regional councilor Mathias Renard, the number of casualties was so high that the intensive care unit and operating room at the regional hospital quickly became overwhelmed.

According to officials, helicopters and ambulances quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims, including citizens of various countries.

"We are shocked," Frédéric Giesler, commander of the Valais cantonal police, said at a press conference.
