Talks between Trump and Zelensky and the EU leaders ended on Sunday with no agreement which surprised no one except presumably Trump or else why did he even bother?

Trump in the post talks presser said there was no agreement to hand over territory but Russia will have all of the Donbass within a few months anyway so Trump has been listening finally.

But why bother trying to get an agreement to end the war from Zelensky who has made literally billions of $$$ so far and is looking forward to another very big payout very shortly, or from the European leaders for which any peace other than victory will be political suicide.

Meanwhile December looks like being another big month for ground given up by the Ukrainian army under continuous pressure by the Russians along the entire contact line.

Ukraine moved reserves from Zap and Donetsk oblasts, territory they will lose in any likely agreement, to Kharkov (Kupiansk city), which the Russians will leave. It will be interesting to see if the counter offensive in Kupiansk continues or was just a show for Trump for the duration of the talks.

The battle for the surrounded city of Myrnohrad is over, you can tell because the AFU just announced they rescued several hundred Ukraine troops after breaking through 2 Russian frontlines (outfacing and infacing) and the 10 km of Russian controlled ground between them. Which is blatant nonsense, but which is of course automatically believed by western ‘journalists’.

In Zaporizhzhia oblast the Russians have already pushed 3 km beyond the city of Huliapole towards the remaining small city of Orikhiv which is only lightly defended having been designated indefensible by planners.

After that is Zaporizhzhia city itself of over 3 million, surrounding that will lead to surrender and with it the whole Zap oblast.

So in 3-6 months Putin may have gained militarily all he demanded at the negotiating table so we can expect soon an increase in demands for a new agreement for the fighting to stop and that will be for the surrender of Odessa and Kharkov oblasts to the Russians. That’s how war goes, which, at the end of the day, is just diplomacy by other means.

Reminder, Zelensky doesn’t care so long as the money keeps flowing, and the European leadership are doing all they can to make sure it does.

The after-peace talks interviews have revealed more about where we are, and that is, as far away from any kind of peace as ever.

Trump continues to kid himself. He is determined to come to a deal without any kind of hard diplomacy whatsoever.

And hence after every effort he stands up and says “we’re not quite there yet, we’re nearly there, 90% there, but not there yet.

He’s spent the entire year doing this. You would think at some point he’d realise he’s just making himself look an idiot.

Turns out that trying to take shortcuts is only making the road longer, much longer.

It doesn’t matter what % he thinks things are, the reality is that nothing has moved an inch.

He doesn’t trust the DOS swamp dwelling diplomats fine but he still needs someone with proper diplomatic skills not his golf buddies.

In the meantime Putin continues winning and swallowing up more of the Ukrainian army and Ukrainian territory. Ukrainians seem to see this as a small price to pay for the joy of watching Zelensky become a multi-billionaire.

This never happens in the real world, in the real world you pay for losing, not get paid.

Traditionally what happens is that you run out of funds and so you just stop before your country is totally destroyed, irrevocably and for all time. Very few rulers throughout history were stupid enough to let things ever go that far.

The Europeans are equally happy the conflict will continue as they get job security from a never ending conflict.

At this point, and for everyone's sake, you might just wish Putin would get on with it but Putin is happy as is.

His losses of manpower are a 10th of what Zelensky and the West claim. The Russian economy can keep going indefinitely at 7% of GDP spent on defence annually, no need to ratchet it up. The people see they are winning, there is full employment and wages are rising.

At this rate we could well be looking at another year of war and another 20% of Ukraine transferred into Russian hands.

I’m sure that given enough money Zelensky could scrape up another new army from somewhere to feed into the grinder.
