Migrant workers from the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia are treated very badly. They are highly underpaid, subject to forced labor and live in filthy conditions. One of the taxi drivers from Pakistan told me that he shared his room with 15 others.

As soon as a migrant worker arrives in UAE, his passport is confiscated by the employer to prevent him from changing jobs or voluntarily leaving the country. Since public protests are banned in the UAE, these workers cannot raise their voices openly.

I experienced some of these things myself. When I was checking into my hotel, they wanted to keep my passport till check out. I clearly told them that I’m here for tourism, not work, that I have been to other countries and never gave up my passport anywhere.
