Rus are doing the exact opposite that the US did in Afghanistan. The US had a major advantage and engaged in manoeuvre warfare, the Afghans retreated and dispersed and the US then spent the next 20 years having to fight a guerrilla war.

Russia is fighting an attrition war, the goal is to completely destroy the Ukr army so that it is incapable of waging another war for decades to come. It can do this wherever it's strategically advantageous to do so. Rus do not need to move in any direction so long as they are continually luring the Ukr army into a killing field.

Attrition warfare, same as WW1 & WW2, can continue toe to toe for years before one side just suddenly collapses.
