Some people say 1 year, some say 3 months will be enough. These very different time periods confuse my head! :?

Briefly, what is the ideal or generally accepted optimization test period?
3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year etc. ?

Because 1 year is unnecessary long and 3 months will be very short...
