President Joe Biden is set to ban new offshore oil and gas development across 625 million acres of U.S. coastal territory, including parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
This move aims to solidify his climate legacy and advance the goal of decarbonizing the U.S. economy by 2050.
However, the central and western Gulf of Mexico, which account for about 14% of the nation's oil and gas production, will remain open for potential new leasing.
The ban is expected to be announced on Monday and is based on the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, which grants the president authority to withdraw unleased lands from federal waters.
This legal framework has been used by previous administrations to restrict offshore drilling in various regions.
