On May 9, 1865, US President Andrew Johnson officially announced the end of the Civil War, which lasted four years and claimed the lives of 620,000 Americans. The last armed formation of the defeated South to surrender to the army of the North on June 23 was Cherokee Brigadier General Stand Waity's Trans-Mississippi Indian Army.
